Felt wool is the oldest textile. The origin of felt is unknown but is believed to date back to prehistoric times in Central Asia. Felt may have been discovered when wool, shed from wild sheep, was used to soften sleeping areas, and it formed a cohesive fabric, or when the wool on skins used for clothing became matted. In modern times, Felt is used for home décor, gifts and accessories items.

Felt is produced by moistening, compressing, rolling, beating, or rubbing wool fiber together. They are made up of natural wool fiber which is 100% pure lamb wool. Felt products are non- allergic, non-toxic and azo-free.

FELT MANUFACTURING PROCESS BY HAND
Felt products are typically composed of wool or other natural raw materials, which generally produce high quality soft fabric. The technique of making felt is easy and simple. The step by step process of felt manufacturing by hand is described below.
  • Step 1: Place down bubble wrap, on a flat surface.
  • Step 2: Then, place thin layers of natural carded wool – small pieces facing the same direction on the surface.
  • Step 3: Then, add a second layer of wool, on the opposite direction to the first layer of wool.
  • Step 4: Spray with luke warm soapy water and rub the wool gently.
  • Step 5: Then, put a thin layer of wool, to the second layer of wool.
  • Step 6: And repeat the same method by adding soapy water and layers of wool until it becomes thick and the fibers stick together.
  • Step 7: Then, by using the bind or wrap technique, roll up the felt and work it back and forth until it becomes smooth.
  • Step 8: Next, fold the felt and rinse until the water is clear and no soap remainder is left.
  • Step 9: Finally, let the wet felt dry on sunlight.

Now, the felt is ready to be crafted in different designs and patterns.
